I was excited by the opportunity to work on this animation of Hotel Row due to the deep historical significance of Mitchell Street. Built in 1908, Hotel Row once welcomed travelers from the nearby Terminal Station, offering modest hotel lobbies, cafés, and shops. The Art Deco architecture, particularly at the Scoville Hotel, drew me in with its intricate detailing, mosaic tiles, and ornamentation—testaments to the craftsmanship of the era. The history of Mitchell Street, intertwined with the rise, challenges, and revitalization of Atlanta, makes it an inspiring subject to explore through animation.
The animation itself draws heavily from the architectural elements and tile designs of the buildings on Mitchell Street. The geometric patterns and ornamental motifs from the era are reflected in the movement and visual texture of the piece. By weaving in subtle nods to the vibrant past as well as modern additions to the area like the alligator mural by artist ROA on Concordia Hall, I aimed to evoke the spirit of a bygone era while celebrating the resilience and rich history of this iconic street.
