Artist Statement: Yvonne McCoy’s mixed media collage work naturally fosters a deep sense of appreciation and empathy for our ancestors. Through her use of archival imagery mixed with modern touches - Yvonne is able to visually represent the unseen connections between who we are and where we’ve come from. Physically digging through the archives at Spelman College and hearing the stories of the founders, the students, and the faculty of this space opened a portal for Yvonne. A portal that takes a glimpse into the impact that Atlanta’s HBCUs have had in the past - and the wonders they will create for our future.
Yvonne is extremely grateful to the Archival team at Spelman College. A HUGE thank you to Holly Smith and Nicole Carr for opening the doors to their archives. This project was made possible with their knowledge and willingness to share it with us.
